This is a high-profile celebration of the positive contribution made by Scotland’s public to the understanding and preservation of Scotland’s rich archaeological heritage, with the opening address to be given by Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture.
East Lothian Council and Archaeology Scotland are working in partnership to deliver Scotland’s first ever Community Archaeology Conference. This exciting two-day conference will celebrate the achievements of community projects from all over Scotland from Shetland to the Borders. This is an educational event intended to foster links between groups working in different areas of the country, bringing over 200 volunteers together with archaeological professionals. The conference will include training workshops, educational lectures and an exhibition of Scottish projects and initiatives. The conference will also produce a publication describing projects from across Scotland. Presentations will be given by community volunteers themselves, providing useful firsthand accounts of the realities and challenges of volunteering in heritage. The conference is free and open to all.

The Prestongrange Story: Getting involved in Archaeology. Saturday Sept 6th 2008 (Event programme available)
Excavation Open Day Planned
As part of East Lothian Archaeology Week (Sept 8th-17th) the Prestongrange Community Archaeology project will be throwing open its doors to the public. On Saturday, September 8th from 11am-4pm there will be tours on the excavations, artefacts displays and exhibitions. Come along to find out more about the project, what has been found this fieldwork season and meet some of the volunteers. All events are free. East Lothian Archaeology Week and East Lothian Doors Open Day are part of Scottish Archaeology Month.
Archaeology Conference for East Lothian
To find out more about recent archaeological work in East Lothian and recent discoveries why not go along to the Edinburgh and East Lothian annual archaeological conference on Saturday November 17th (4-5pm)! This year's conference is to be held at the Royal Museum, Chambers Street, Edinburgh and booking is highly recommended. Tickets can be bought in advance by sending cheques (made payable to East Lothian Council) to Irene Burnett, Culture and Community Development, East Lothian Council EH41 3HA. Limited tickets will also be available on the day.
Speakers include Dr Tony Pollard (from BBC2's Two Men in a Trench); Dr Bill Hanson on Elginhaugh Roman fort, Kristian Pedersen on early Man in East Lothian and Michelle Brown on Early Medieval East Lothian amongst other important speakers.
